As the first entry to this blog, let me introduce myself and about my family. Most of the things that I’m going to mention in this first entry of mine would be similar to the ones I’ve posted in my profile. Basically, this is an elaborate version of the ones in my profile.
I was born on the 18th February 1979. I am the only child in the family. My parents – Megat Zaharuddin Bin Megat Shamsudin and Wan Mariam Binti Wan Nurizan are first cousins. In other words, my parents share a common grandfather. My dad’s paternal grandfather and my mum’s maternal grandfather is the same person.
I had my primary education at the King Edward VII School, Taiping, Perak. Later, in 1992, I pursued my secondary education at Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), Ipoh, Perak. I completed my Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia in 1996 and was awarded the Public Service Department Scholarship to study abroad.
Prior to my departure to the United Kingdom, I had my pre-departure course at the PPP-ITM for 3 months in 1997. In September that year, I began my A-Level studies at Brooke House College, Market Harborough, Leicestershire, UK. I completed my A-Levels in 1999 and furthered my tertiary education at the University of Kent at Canterbury, UK. I graduated in 2002 with a Joint Honours Degree in Computing and Accounting & Finance.
Later, in September 2002, I joined the School of Oriental & African Studies, University of London to further my studies at post-graduate level in South East Asian Studies – majoring in Malay Aristocratic Genealogies.
In 2004, I began my career as a banker at Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad. Initially attached to the Eastern Region based in Kuala Terengganu. Later transferred to the Central Region based in Kuala Lumpur. I briefly joined RHB Bank in 2009 for career advancement. Currently, I am serving as Senior Relationship Manager for Consumer Financing at OCBC Al-Amin.
I am also a musician. I hold a Grade 8 Pianoforte from the Trinity College of Music, London (obtained in 1995). I am a pianist, guitarist, composer and arranger. I used to perform at Riviera Bay Resort, Malacca; Hotel Istana, Kuala Lumpur; the Orchid Club, Malacca; and Primula Beach Resort, Kuala Terengganu as their resident musician. My first published composition is ‘Naga’ for the band – ‘The Lost Plot’.
I was selected as finalist for the DBP Sayembara Mencipta Lagu Puisi twice – the first was in 2005 and the second was in 2007. My composition in 2005 was based on the poem ‘Pujukan Hati’ by Muhammad Yassin Maamor (Pungguk). The song was performed by my brother-in-law – Megat Khas Bin Megat Ramli. For the 2007 composition, the song was based on the poem ‘Pengait Tua’ by Muhammad Haji Salleh and was performed by Azfar (One In A Million).
