The Megat Terawis Clan Association of Malaysia

The formation of the Megat Terawis Clan Association of Malaysia (in Malay – Persatuan Keturunan Megat Terawis Malaysia) has its roots way back in the 1950s. On 9th December 1958, a group of family members calling themselves ‘Waris Benih Megat‘ intends to unite all clan members and to form a strong family society. The title of Orang Kaya Bendahara was hereditary within the clan since the reign of Sultan Muzaffar Shah I in 1528. The persons involved in this Waris Benih Megat were:

Megat Omar Bin Megat Muhammad Ali

Puteri Mahyam Binti Megat Yassin

Dato’ Megat Osman Bin Megat Muhammad Ali

Datin Puteri Zubaidah Binti Megat Musa

Megat Muhammad Isa Bin Megat Ismail

Wan Teh Raisah Binti Temenggong Wan Hussain

Dato’ Seri Dr Megat Khas Bin Megat Omar

Datin Seri Puteri Hawa Binti Dato’ Megat Osman

Datin Seri Jamnah Binti Raus

Dato’ Megat Yunus Bin Megat Muhammad Isa

Megat Zainuddin Bin Megat Ahmad

Megat Jamal-ul-Zamri Bin Megat Muhammad Isa

Megat Adnan Bin Megat Omar

Megat Marzuki Bin Megat Omar

Megat Ishak Bin Megat Omar

Unfortunately, the group’s intention did not materialised. Later on, in the mid 1980s, there was another attempt to form a clan association for the descendants of Megat Terawis. This attempt was led by the late ACP(R) Megat Abdul Hamid Bin Megat Jaafar and the name they have chosen for the association was Ikatan Warisan Megat (IKWAM). Again, the formation of IKWAM did not materialise as it was stucked at pro-tem level and it did not reach the stage of formal submission to the Registrar of Societies.

Over the years, there were independent initiatives to unite the clan by gathering the genealogical information of the family. However, this only completes the family tree on paper but not the family bonding between individuals within the clan. Credit should be given to the following individuals who were dedicated in compiling the clan’s genealogy throughout the years:

Wan Ismail Bin Wan Muhammad Aqib (1932)

Megat Ismail Bin Megat Ahmad (1954 & 1969)

Megat Ramli Bin Megat Jaafar (1985)

Megat Osman Bin Megat Abu Bakar (1993)

In 1993, a Form 2 student from Sekolah Tuanku Abdul Rahman (STAR), Ipoh, Perak was doing his History project. The title he has chosen was the Biography of Dato’ Seri Dr Megat Khas. The name of this Form 2 student is Megat Iskandar Bin Megat Zaharuddin (the author of this blog a.k.a. ME!). This history project has led him to meet the grandson of Dr Megat Khas – Megat Osman Bin Megat Abu Bakar. It was after meeting Megat Osman that he first experienced the beauty of genealogy.  It was Megat Osman who introduced me with my family’s genealogy.

In 1997, I went to the United Kingdom to read my A-Levels and subsequently in 1999, I was accepted to study at the University of Kent at Canterbury. It was during my days at Kent that I first encountered rare historical books regarding Malaya. It was Kent that I first read Winstedt’s History of Perak, Wilkinson’s Papers on Malay Subjects and Maxwell’s Genealogy of Perak Sultans. I became more enthusiastic about history and upon reading these rare materials, I gathered the source of references and make it a point to see for myself the actual manuscripts which are kept in the United Kingdom.

My first mission is to see MS40333(2) The Megat Family in Perak which is kept at SOAS. I finally got hold of the manuscript during Winter 1999. Upon reading the manuscript, the youngest person mentioned in the mansucript from my family’s ancestry is my great-great grandfather i.e. Megat Muhammad Ali Bin Megat Pendia. With a copy made for me, I used the manuscript to compile an updated version of the genealogy by combining the ones in the manuscript with the ones I’ve got from Megat Osman in 1993.

During the Summer Break of 2000, I began my genealogical research by interviewing my late grandmother – Puteri Hamsiah Binti Megat Ibrahim. She was a strong supporter of my passion in genealogy. The next person whom I interviewed was Dato’ Tun Hamzah Bin Tun Abdul Raffar. Then, I became more excited and decided to use a radical approach. My tools are telephone and a phone directory book. Every day, I searched the directory for those with the name Megat. I made a call, introduced myself and ask them about the genealogy. If they know, I would arrange an appointment to meet them. If they don’t know, I ask them whether they know any relative who are knowledgable in genealogy. This has led me to meet and interview the following:

Hj Tasir Bin Mufti Saaya

Megat Abdul Wahid Bin Megat Abdul Manan

Wan Abdul Rahman Bin Wan Hassan

Megat Saruji Bin Megat Ayub

Megat Wahab Bin Megat Samah

With the aid of technology, I managed to gather and record the genealogical data in a genealogy software. It is very easy to record and the family relationships is stored dynamically. Using the same approach as above,  two previous genealogical works of Megat Ramli Bin Megat Jaafar and Wan Ismail Bin Wan Muhammad Aqib were given to me by Puteri Halimatun Saadiah Binti Megat Wahiddin and Megat Jamaluddin Bin Megat Ishak respectively.

By the end of the Summer Break in 2000, I have compiled an extensive genealogical database of my family. But still, it is incomplete as many other branches of the clan were not recorded as no sources were available. When I returned to the UK, sometime between Autumn and Winter 2000, I met one relative – Puteri Edaroyati Binti Megat Wahab who is doing her doctorate at Lancaster University. She told me about her genealogy and she suggested that I meet her father as her father kept a copy of the extensive genealogical research done by Puteri Edaroyati’s eldest uncle – Megat Ismail Bin Megat Ahmad. Hence, the following Summer Break of 2001, I met Puteri Edaroyati’s father – Megat Wahab Bin Megat Ahmad and yes, he gave me a copy of the genealogical works of his brother – Megat Ismail.

So now, with all 4 different genealogical works, plus the main source from SOAS and the information gathered through interviews, I  managed to compile the most extensive genealogy by combining all these sources. At first, I kept it to myself. But the London Silat Show in Winter 2002 were to be the turning point or should I say, the beginning of a new journey. As Chairman of the United Kingdom Executive Coucil for Malaysian Students (UKEC), I was invited to attend the show of Silat. The performers are from Malaysia which was led by the cultural troupe ‘Sanggar Teater’.

At the end of the show, the organiser introduced me to the performers. Interestingly, when one of the Malaysian head of the group knew that my name is Megat, he immediately pulled me to meet one Silat performer who is known by the group to practice the Silat descended by Megat Terawis. That martial artist is none other than Tun Azmel Bin Ahmad – a grandson of Megat Abdul Rahman Bin Megat Hussin of Batu Gajah. We had a chat and surprisingly, when I said about compiling genealogies, he told me that he brought his family tree (compiled by his late grandfather) to the UK. He didn’t explain why he brought the chart and in fact, he didn’t plan to do so.  It was after this meeting with Tun Azmel that I’ve decided to unite the clan using genealogy with the aid of technology.

That very night, when I reached my house at Caledonian Road, London, I’ve created the Yahoo!Group – Salasilah Megat. I began including the email addresses of relatives into the group. Support was also given by my father by extending the group membership to his network of relatives. Within a month, the number grew exceeding 20 people which includes Megat Mohamad Mentaha Bin Megat Alias. It was Megat Mentaha who boosted the membership in the group where he single-handedly gathered the email addresses of relatives.

When the membership of this group was extended to Tan Sri Megat Najmuddin Bin Dato’ Seri Megat Khas (then a Dato’), he instructed my father and Ayah Da (Megat Mentaha) to organise a family gathering within one week. The Dato’ will sponsor the food and venue – which is Kelab Golf Negara Subang. The target was 50 pax and on the gathering day – Christmas Day of 2002, the attendance were 250! After the gathering at KGNS, the Dato’ suggested that we form an official clan society just like what the family attempted to do in the 1950s and the 1980s. But now, with the aid of technology, it is possible.

Before we can form a society, we need consent from family members and in order to obtain their consent, they planned to organised a grand gathering of the Megat Terawis Clan. The first grand gathering was successfuly held in Kuala Kangsar on 1 June 2003 with an attendance of 1700 family members. Indeed, we got the go-ahead from the family members to officially form a clan society.

The Society Constitutional Meeting was held in August 2003 at the residence of Datuk Dr Megat Burhainuddin Bin Megat Abdul Rahman. Representatives from all states in Malaysia were present. The sample constitution from IKWAM was given by ACP(R) Megat Abdul Hamid Bin Megat Jaafar to those present at the meeting. The outcome of the meeting was a Constitution of the Megat Terawis Clan Society of Malaysia. This Constitution is to be submitted together with the application form to the Registrar of Societies. On 19th December 2003, Persatuan Keturunan Megat Terawis Malaysia was officially registered with the Registrar of Societies.

    Assalamualaikum,

Bro, saya zuriat Tun Saban, asal pun taiping, sekolah st. george, arwah bapa bekas guru King Edward, cikgu sukan. Org2 tua yg bagitau, pernah melihat salsilah keluarga.
Rasa2nya percampuran keluarga Raja, Tengku, Tun, Syed sebelah atas dah banyak pada mana2 family tree.

Salsilah atas pada Tun Saban ada bersangkutan dgn salsilah raja2 Melayu eg Perak, Pahang (Org kaya Bendahara), Terengganu & Selangor kalau tak silap.

    Nice work.
    Wassalam

    • Megat Iskandar At-Terawis says:

      Sdr Amin,

    SALAM EN MEGAT.. .

DALAM SALASILAH KETURUNAN TUN SABAN YANG EN MEGAT BERI PADA SAYA, TIDAK DINYATAKAN SIAPA ISTERI TUN SABAN YANG SEBENAR. YANG ADA CUMA ANAK-ANAK TUN SABAN. MUNGKIN EN MEGAT ADA MAKLUMAT MENGENAI PERKARA TERSEBUT..

    TERIMA KASIH.. .

    • Megat Iskandar At-Terawis says:

      Dear Rozila,

Suri bermaksud “spouse of”.

      Regards,

      MEGAT ISKANDAR

SALAM…SAYA BARU DAPATKAN SEBUAH BUKU DARI PENYELIA SAYA ( DR TALIB SAMAT ), IAITU “TUN SABAN DAN PEMBESAR MELAYU PERAK “. PENULISNYA IALAH MEOR AHMAD TAJUDDIN BIN MEOR MAZLAN ( MATA)..DALAM BUKU ITU ADA DINYATAKAN SALASILAH TUN SABAN BALIK YANG DISUSUN OLEH PENULIS. BELIAU MENYATAKAN NAMA TUN SABAN BALIK IAITU RADEN SAPIRO @ TUN SAB’AN@ AHMAD TAJUDDIN DAN ISTERINYA PULA SURI SERI MAHARAJA BINTI RADEN SUMBADDIN..APA-APA PUN, BUKU INI AKAN JADI SALAH SATU BAHAN KAJIAN SAYA.. .

    • Megat Iskandar At-Terawis says:

  6. Megat Roslan bin Megat Mustapa Kamal says:

    Salam saudara Megat Iskandar,
Saya adalah sepupu kepada Tun Azmel Bin Ahmad – cucu kepada Megat Abdul Rahman Bin Megat Hussin dari Batu Gajah. Saya ada 2 soalan iaitu:
    1. Bolehkah saudara Iskandar beri maklumat berkenaan salasilah keturunan saya bermula dari Megat Terawis hingga tok saya Megat Abdul Rahman B. Megat Hussin.
    Sekian. Terima kasih.

  7. Megat Iskandar At-Terawis says:

    Terima kasih atas soalan-soalan Sdr.

Untuk soalan pertama, salasilah saudara ialah:

    Megat Roslan
    Megat Mustafa Kamal
    Megat Abdul Rahman
    Megat Hussin
    Megat Hassan
    Megat Mustafa (Megat Mior)
Megat Mansur (Orang Kaya Besar Seri Maharaja)
Megat Abu Kassim (Bendahara Hilang di Teluk)
Megat Terawis II (Bendahara Seri Maharaja)
    Megat Menjanas (Bendahara Kukut)
    Megat Abdullah (Bendahra Garang)
Megat Biajad Mustafa (Bendahara Muda Megat Sulung)
    Megat Terawis (Bendahara Paduka Raja)

    • Megat Halim says:

      Assalammualaikum Saudara Megat Iskandar,

  8. Megat Roslan bin Megat Mustapa Kamal says:

    Salam saudara Megat Iskandar,

Terima kasih diatas maklumat yang diberi.

  9. Raja Adley Paris Ishkandar Shah bin Raja Baharudin says:

    Assalammualaikum En . Megat Iskandar

No. 18 – terbitan MBRAS) menyatakan bahwa Sultan Muzaffar Shah I mempunyai seorang putera bernama Raja Muhammad (anak gundik).

    Terima kasih.

  10. paja minang says:

    • Megat Iskandar At-Terawis says:

Sekian.

    • Megat Iskandar At-Terawis says:

      Terima kasih Ayahanda Zaharudin,

Kalau tak silap, Ayahanda ni anak Mufti Hj Saaya kan?

Don’t worry, way back in 2001 saya telah pun bertemu dengan Pak Lang Alias di Kenas dan saya telah pun meneliti salasilah yang ada dalam simpanannya.
